Floods
Floodsaresecondonlytofireasthemostcommonofallnaturaldisasters.They occuralmosteverywhereintheworld,resultinginwidespreaddamageandeven death.Consequently,scientistshavelongtriedtoperfecttheirabilitytopredict floods.Thereareanumberofconditions,fromdeepsnowonthegroundtohuman error,that cause flooding.

Whendeepsnowmeltsitcreatesalargeamountofwater.Althoughdeepsnow alonerarelycausesfloods,whenitoccurstogetherwithheavyrainandsudden warmerweatheritcanleadtoseriousflooding.Meltingsnowalsocontributesto highwaterlevelsinriversandstreams.Heavyrainswillresultintherivers overflowingand floodingthe surroundingland.

Riversthatarecoveredinicecanalsoleadtoflooding.Whenicebeginstomelt, thesurfaceoftheicecracksandbreaksintolargepieces.Thesepiecesoficemove andfloatdowntheriver.Brokenicedamsarenottheonlydamproblemsthatcan causeflooding.Whenalargehuman-madedambreaksorfailstoholdthewater collectedbehindit,theresultscanbedevastating.Damscontainsuchhuge amounts of water behindthemthat whensuddenbreaksoccur, the destructive force ofthewaterislikeagreattidalwave.Unleasheddamwaterscantraveltensof kilometres,coverthegroundinmetresofmudanddebris,anddrownandcrush everything andcreature in theirpath.

Althoughscientistscannotalwayspredictexactlywhenfloodswilloccur,theydo knowagreatdealaboutwhenfloodsarelikely,orprobably,goingtooccur.Deep snow,ice-coveredrivers,andweakdamsareallstrongconditionsforpotential flooding.Hopefully,thisknowledgeofwhyfloodshappencanhelpusreducethe damage theycause.
