Задание 10. Прочтите текст "Medical Education in Russia" и выполните упражнения, которые за ним следуют.

Text "Medical Education In Russia"

All the citizens of our country who have a complete secondary education may apply to a medical institute. All the applicants are required to take Unified State Examinations in biology, chemistry and the Russian language. And those who have obtained the highest scores in the examinations are admitted.

The instruction at higher schools is given by lectures, by group instruction and practical work. The attendance of lectures and classes is compulsory for all the students.

The academic year begins on September 1st and is divided into 2 terms of four months each. At the end of each term the students have to pass a number of examinations.

The study course lasts for 6 years and covers the basic preclinical and clinical subjects. In the preclinical years the curriculum is uniform for the students of medical, sanitation and hygiene, stomatological and pediatric faculties.

During the first two years students study physics, organic, analytical, physical, biological chemistry. The students also study human anatomy, physiology, histology, microbiology, Latin, a foreign language and philosophy. Beginning with the third year special clinical subjects are introduced: all branches of therapy, surgery, gynaecology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, infectious diseases and others. Senior students have a lot of practical work with patients in clinics, hospitals and out-patient departments. Students get knowledge in a definite number of medical procedures and learn to diagnose. At the end of the third year students have a six-week practical course. They perform the duties of nurses. After their fourth year the students have another practical course lasting eight weeks during which they act as doctors' assistants at the therapeutical, surgical and gynaecological departments. After the fifth year students take six-week practical course in the out-patient department.

In our country specialization begins in the sixth year which is the final year of medical school and is termed sub-internship. During this sixth year specialization is in internal medicine, surgery or obstetrics and gynaecology. During the sixth year students work in clinics, polyclinics, sanitary and epidemiological stations. They also attend lectures, seminars and clinical conferences.

At the end of the sixth sub-internship year students pass the final state examinations and receive their diploma. Then they have a further year of internship. Interns work under direct supervision of experienced specialists in clinics and in major hospitals. Medical graduates can apply for the postgraduate course. During three years postgraduates prepare a thesis, defend it and obtain the degree of candidate of Medical Science.
