Перескажите текст. What is a computer? Computers appeared in people’s life not long ago. The first computer was invented by Charles Babbage, a professor of mathematics at Cambridge University. The first commercial computer appeared in 1951. In 1975 the first personal computers came into being. And now it is impossible to imagine our life without computers. A computer is a device for storing, processing, retrieving the information. The machine is capable of storing and manipulating numbers, letters and characters or symbols. The basic job of the computer is processing of information. They accept information in the form of instructions, called a program, and characters, called data, perform mathematical and logical operations on the information, and then supply results of these operations. The program tells the computer what to do and the data provide the information needed to solve the problem. Data are kept in the place called memory. Computers have circuits for performing arithmetic operations such as addition, subtractions, division, multiplication and exponentiation. The computer has input and output devices. The computer’s input device is a disk drive or a tape drive. They read the information into the computer. For outputting the information we use a printer or a cathode-ray display, which shows the results on a TV-like screen. A computer can replace people in dull, routine tasks and perform the job in a fraction of the time. It seems that a computer works like a mechanical brain, but its achievements are limited by the minds of human beings. Computers are widely used in business, industry, offices, schools, communication services, in homes. Computers can control the work of power stations, plants and docks. They help in managing of economy. Computers are also applied in banking system, in military systems, in space exploration, in medicine, education. Air traffic control is impossible without computers. So we can say that computers are used in all spheres of our life. |
