    Schools in Great Britain

    In Great Britain boys and girls begin to go to school when they are five years old. Some boys and girls go to school till they are fifteen years old, others go up to sixteen or eighteen.

    English schools are open five days a week. On Saturdays and Sundays there are no lessons.

    There are primary and secondary schools in Great Britain. English children begin to go to a secondary school when they are eleven or older. There are different kinds of secondary schools in Britain. Some secondary schools are only for boys, some are only for girls and some are for boys and girls. Some schools prepare pupils for work, others for the university.

    The pupils of all schools have uniforms. The boys wear dark grey, dark green or dark blue uniforms. The girls in some schools wear blouses and skirts, in others they wear dresses.

    The Cat and the Mice

    A cat lives in a small house. In the kitchen of the cat’s house live little mice. The cat is very big and every day she eats one or two mice. But on her birthday the cat does not eat mice. Every year all the mice in her house come to the cat’s birthday party. Of course, the cat is very glad to see the mice. They give her birthday presents: cakes, bottles of milk and interesting toys. The toys are made of paper and cotton. The cat likes the cakes and milk. She likes the toys too.

    Last year the mice came to the cat’s birthday party and said “Here is blue ribbon with a small bell for you”. The cat was glad because the ribbon was nice, it was made of silk. The cat took the ribbon, put it on and said “Thank you. I like the ribbon with the bell very much. I am going to wear it all the time”. The mice were happy for they knew when the cat came.

    When the mice heard the bell, they ran away from the kitchen.

    One day Marry Poppins, Jane and Michael go to her uncle, Mr Wigg. He lives in a small flat.

    In his flat there is a nice large living-room. In the left corner of it there is a fireplace. There is a big table with four cups, bread and butter, cookies, chocolates and a large apple cake.

    “Nice to see you”, says Mr Wigg but the children can’t see him.

    “Oh, my uncle! Is it your birthday today?” Marry Poppins says and looks up. Jane and Michael look up too. They can see a fat man above the table. He is in the air (в воздухе). He has a book in his hands.

    «Hello, Mary”, says Mr Wigg, “I’m very sorry, but it is my birthday.”

    “But why…?” says Jane.

    “But how…?” says Michael.

    “When my birthday comes on Friday and I smile on that day, I become very light (лёгкий). I can’t walk. The first funny idea, and I’m up like a balloon! I’m in the air.”

    Mr Wigg looks so funny above the table. The children smile and suddenly they fly up. Now they are next to Mr Wigg. They are above the table, in the air.

    In the big mountains there lives a yak (як). He can see white snow, cold ice and short grass near him. There are no shops, no ice cream and no children in the mountains. He is very sad.

    One day a bird comes to him and tells him about the blue sea, happy children and tasty ice-cream. So Yak says good-bye to his family and goes down the mountain. He goes down and down. But he can see only big mountains around him.

    Suddenly Yak stops next to a little mountain river. He is thirsty and very sad.

    “ Why are you so sad?” asks the river.

    “I know it very well. Come on, I will show you where the sea is!”

    Now Yak and the river go to the sea together. The river gets bigger and bigger.

    “I can see the sea! It is very big! It is wonderful! It is nicer here than in the cold mountains,” says Yak at last.

    He sits on the sand and watches the sea. The happy children come up to him and give him ice cream. He loves it! Now Yak is the happiest yak in the world.

    Mary opened her eyes. She saw three big bears near the bed. She jumped out of the window and ran home.

    “I want to eat you now!”

    The Wolf jumped out of the bed and ate the girl. The next moment the girl’s father ran into the house. He killed the wolf and inside (внутри) the wolf he saw Granny and his daughter, alive (живые) and happy.

    Rabbit’s Clothes.

    One day the rabbit was very hungry and ran to Mr Grey’s garden. There were some sweet carrots, red tomatoes, big potatoes and red apples there! The rabbit was happy in this garden!

    At 12 o’clock Mr Grey came into the garden and started his work. Suddenly he saw Peter: “A rabbit in my garden!” Mr Grey jumped up and ran after the rabbit. The rabbit jumped up and ran after away from Mr Grey. But he couldn’t see the garden door.

    He lost his red shoes near the tomatoes. He had no shoes on! Now he could run on his four legs! Then he jumped out of his jacket. Now he had no clothes on and ran very fast.

    Suddenly he saw the garden door. Closed! The rabbit went under it. How happy he was to be out of the garden!

    Mr Grey was happy too. He had no rabbits in his garden. When he saw a blue jacket and shoes, he got happier:

    “Now I have got some nice clothes! Two red shoes and a blue jacket.”

    Mike is an American boy. He lives in Los Angeles, California. He lives with his family in a new house. He is eleven years old and he has got an older brother, David, and a younger sister, Emma.

    He starts his day at about half past seven. He gets up, goes to the bathroom, takes a shower, brushes his teeth and gets dressed. Then he has breakfast and at a quarter to eight he leaves home and catches the bus to school.

    Classes begin at half past eight. He usually has lunch at the school canteen at half past twelve. After school, at a quarter past five, he goes home. There he does his school homework and when he finishes it he helps his Mum laying the table. At half past seven the family dines together.

       Mike is a very helpful boy, so he helps his mother cleaning up everything after dinner.

       He usually watches TV for a while after dinner and at about ten o’clock the most he brushes his teeth again, puts on his Spider-Man pajamas and goes to bed. His parents always kiss him goodnight before he gets asleep. Mike is a very happy boy!
