Education Around the World
Do you look forward (1)… going to school or do you absolutely dread it? Or you’d prefer to do to school somewhere else! This week “GO!” magazine takes a look at how schools are different (2) … the world.
[1] There are many types of schools in the world. Some are expensive, private boarding schools, like Rugby School in England where the game of rugby was invented. There are some specialist schools, like drama schools, dance schools or the 40 acrobatic schools in Wuqiao, China. It might sound like fun, bat, as 13-year-old Zhang Li explains, “Our training starts at 5:30 am. It is very hard, but these skills will help me (3)… a living when I leave.” There are also a wide range of school subjects at different schools. At Holden High School in the USA, subjects include comic book art, photography, song writing and yoga.
[2] At a school in the Annapurna Mountains in Nepal, classes don’t start until 10 am because a lot of students have to walk for about an hour to get there. In Japan, it isn’t unusual for students to (4)… two hours or more getting to school on public transport. “It’s not so bad,” says 15-year-old Keiko from Tokyo. “I sometimes sleep or study on the train, and it’s a great way to catch (5)… with my friends.”

[3] The average school day in the UK and the USA is 6.5 hours for high school students. Students in Korea and Greece, (6) …, are not so lucky! After school they attend extra classes in private schools. “On a typical day,” says Jie Kim from Seoul, South Korea, ”I don’t get home until midnight, but if I don’t study hard, I won’t (7) … into good university.”
[4] All schools have rules, but sometimes they are really strict. At Eton College, a very famous boy’s boarding school in England, the students have a smart but very old-fashioned uniform with a long jacket, trousers and shirt. In Japan, everyone has to participate in ‘o soji’, or the cleaning of the school, before they go home, whereas at Summerhill School in England, it’s the students who (8) … the rules!
[5] So, in your school better or worse than schools in other parts of the world? No matter what your answer is, we shouldn’t forget that 300 million children in the world don’t have any schools to go to. So even you’d like to change some things about your school, you really are one of the lucky ones!

Feed Your Mind

[1] Eat healthy food and have a healthy body. We have known this for a long time. eat fruit and vegetables and stay physically healthy. However, we now know that there is also healthy food for your brains. Eat healthy food and have a healthy mind. This is not perhaps a surprise. After all, we all know how chocolate can change our mood. However, new research clearly shows the link between diet and mental health.

[2] For a few years, there has been a campaign to improve school meals in the UK. Daniel Brown is the Head teacher of a school that banned junk food and started healthy food in 2006. “Our research shows that, since 2005, the children’s behaviour in class has been a lot better. They are now calmer and they concentrate more. As a result, they are learning more.”

[3] The UK Mental Foundation has started a campaign ‘Feeding Minds’ to publicise its own research. John Powell has been a psychologist for thirty years. “This research shows that our diet has changed a lot, and the level of mental illness has increased. Now, I always consider my patients’ diets, especially when they complain of depression and insomnia.”

[4] The final piece of research concerns the Mediterranean diet. Since 1950, scientists have known that this diet (fruit, vegetables, fish, olive oil, red wine) helps you live longer. Since 2006, they have known that it also prevents Alzheimer’s disease, a serious mental illness that affects the elderly, and they are now telling the world about this important discovery.

[5] So, what does all this research suggest you eat? To improve your memory, eat salmon. To improve your concentration, eat vegetables. To fight insomnia, eat nuts. If depression is a problem, eat brown rice. If you worry about your later years, cook with olive oil. Whatever you do, use your brain and shop for your mental health.

[A] Football

The UK has four teams I international competitions – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The only problem is that the four teams do not usually play very well. However, the English Premier League is one of the best in the world and has some world-famous clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United. A lot of football clubs welcome visitors. Why not go to Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United? Further north, is Hampden Park in Glasgow. It is the oldest international stadium and has the Scottish National Museum of Football.

The players wear white and the game goes very slowly – international games can last for five days! It is open on match days from April to September.

Protect the Environment
[A] Simply speaking, waste is anything thrown away or released into the environment. Unfortunately, a lot of waste can end up harming the environment. You can help protect the environment by learning about and practicing the ‘three Rs’: REDUCE, RECYCLE and REUSE. We have come up with some practical ways of doing this…
[B] Choose to Reuse

It is not waste until you waste it! Think carefully about how you can reuse something before you throw it away.
