The automobile is made up of three basic parts: the power plant, or the engine, the chassis and the body.

The engine is the source of power that makes the wheels rotate and the car move. It includes fuel, cooling, lubricating and electric systems. Most automobile engines have six or eight cylinders.

The chassis includes a power train (power transmission), a running gear, steering and braking systems as well.

The power train carries the power from the engine to the car wheels.

The power transmission, in turn, contains the clutch, gearbox, propeller or cardan shaft, final drive, differential, rear axle and axle shafts. The running gear consists of a frame with axles, wheels and springs.

The body has a hood, fenders and accessories: the heater, stereo tape recorder, windshield wipers, conditioner, speedometer and so on.

BUILT TO ORDER

Almost every car is produced to the customer's specific requirements - a built - to - order car.

As soon as a car is ordered and delivery date agreed, weekly and daily production schedules are created and sent to outside suppliers and the company's own pre-assembly stations. This is to make sure that all the necessary components arrive on time.

First of all, a small data carrier is attached to the floor pan in the body shop. This data carrier contains all the customer's specifications and communicates wirelessly with control units along the production line. In the body shop the floor pan, wheel arches, side panels, and roof are welded together by robots to make the frame of the car. The add-on parts-the doors, boot lid, and bonnet - are then mounted to make the body-in-white.

The finished body shell then goes into the paint shop where the data carrier determines the colour. In final assembly, the interior and exterior parts (for example the front and rear bumpers, headlights, windscreen, and other windows) are fitted. After quality control and a final check, the finished car can be released. It is now ready for delivery to its new owner.

Текст 1. THE SMART

Прочитайте тескт и ответьте на вопросы.

Over the last ten years people have got used to .the sight of very small cars parked in tiny parking spaces. smart is one of the world's youngest car maces and yet the smart for two is such a distinctive car that it has already been included as an exhibit in the Museum of Modern Art in New York - one of only six cars to attain this distinction.

In April 1994, the Micro Compact Car AG was founded in Switzerland as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Swatch. Nicolas Hayek, the inventor of the Swatch watch, brought his idea for an ultra-short small car, and Mercedes-Benz contributed expertise and expertise from more than a hundred years of building cars.

Engineers devised a car which is not only extremely mobile and efficient, but also very economical. Its other key feature is safety, with its unique tridion cell.

After starting development in 1994, the start for two celebrated its premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1997. Production in Hambach, France, started in July 1998, and in October sales took off in other European countries. In 1998, start became a 100% subsidiary of what was then Daimler-Benz AG (today Daimler Chrysler AG).

There is no doubt that the smart for two is a leader in urban mobility. All smart vehicles embody the same brand values and have the same 'DNA': innovation, functionality, and joie de vivre. They appeal to people who are sporty, independent, and young at heart; people who love clever solutions and are open to new ideas. 36-month or 25.000 - mile warranty.

  1. Do you own a smart, or would you ever buy one?

  2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the smart?

  3. In which countries do you think small cars are most successful?

  4. Do you think small cars will become more popular in the future? Why, or why not?

2. Соедините слова и их определения:

1 price a. how big the car is

2 interior features b. the amount of money you pay when you buy a car

3 size c. items inside the car

Текст 2.

  1. Прочтите журнальную статью и ответьте на вопросы:

Navigation aids, telematics equipment, audio system features, and the standard instruments are all fighting for space on the instrument panel (IP). This creates a challenge for interior designers and engineers who need to keep the IP simple so that the driver is not distracted by too many buttons and instruments. Customers also equate a spacious interior with luxury - another reason why the IP shouldn't look overcrowded.

Designers deal with the problem in various ways. They reduce the size of 'space-eaters' such as heating and cooling systems, or even remove them completely from the IP by putting them under the seat or in the boot. They also put many functions, such as station pre-set buttons for audio systems, on touch screens. Touch screens save space on the IP but there is still the danger of overcrowding the screen, which could distract the driver and thus cause an accident. Another problem is the position: the touch screen needs to be located high on the dashboard so that the driver can use it easily while driving. But if it is too high it can be hard to read because of reflections and the sun 'washing out' the screen.

Some engineers see voice recognition as a way to get rid of many manual controls and to simplify the IP. But voice recognition can also be overused. There needs to be an optimal balance between visual displays and voice instructions, so that the driver can deal safely with all the information he or she receives.

  1. Is the IP of your car user-friendly? Why, or why not?

  2. Which do you prefer - an IP that looks like a cockpit with lots of switches and controls, or a more simplified version?

  3. How do you feel about voice recognition controls?

2. Соедините слова и их определения:

1 fuel consumption a. when customers always buy their cars from the same manufacturer

2 performance b. how much petrol or diesel the car uses

3 brandloyalty c. thecar’

Manufacturing is one of the most important application area for automation technology. There are several types of automation in manufacturing. The examples of automated systems used in manufacturing are described below.

1. Fixed automation, sometimes called «hard automation» refers to automated machines in which the equipment configuration allows fixed sequence of processing operations. These machines are programmed by their design to make only certain processing operations. They are not easily changed over from one product style to another. This form of automation needs high why it is suitable for products that are made in large volumes. Examples of fixed automation are mashing transfer lines found in the automobile industry, automatic assembly machines and certain chemical processes;

2. Programmable automation is a form of automation for producing products in large quantities, ranging from several dozen to several thousand units at a time. For each new product the production equipment must be reprogrammed and changed over. This reprogramming and changeover take a period of non-productive time. Production rates in programmable automation are generally lower than in fixed automation, because the equipment is designed to facilitate product changeover rather than for product specialization A numeral control machine tool is a good example of programmable automation, The program is coded m computer memory for each different product style and the machine-tool is controlled by the computer programs.

3. Flexible automation is a kind of programmable automation. The programmable automation requires time to re-program and change over the production equipment for each series of new product. This is lost production time which is expensive. In flexible automation the number of products is limited so that the changeover of the equipment can be done very quickly and automatically. The reprogramming of the equipment in flexible automation is done at a computer terminal without using the production equipment itself. Flexible automation allows a mixture of different products to be produced one right after another.

Only certain processing operations – только некоторые операции по обработке;

needs high initial investments - нуждаться в больших начальных инвестициях;

high production rates - высокие нормы производства.

ROBOTS IN MANUFACTURING

Today most robots are used in manufacturing operations. The applications of robots can be divided into three categories:

1. material handling;

2. processing operations;

3. assembly and inspection.

Material-handling is the transfer of material and loading and unloading of machines. Material-transfer applications require the robot to move materials or work parts from one to another. Many of these tasks are relatively simple: robots pick up parts from one conveyor and place them on another. Other transfer operations are more complex, such as placing parts in an arrangement that can be calculated by the robot. Machine loading and unloading operations utilize a robot to load and unload parts. This requires the robot to be equipped with a grip-per that can grasp parts. Usually the gripper must be designed specifically for the particular part geometry.

In robotic processing operations, the robot manipulates a tool to perform a process on the work part. Examples of such applications include spot welding, continuous arc welding and spray painting. Spot welding of automobile bodies is one of the most common applications of industrial robots. The robot positions a spot welder against the automobile panels and frames to join them. Arc welding is a continuous process in which robot moves the welding rod along the welding seam. Spray painting is the manipulation of a spray-painting gun over the surface of the object to be coated. Other operations in this category include grinding and polishing in which a rotating spindle serves as the robot's tool. The third application area of industrial robots is assembly and inspection. The use of robots in assembly is expected to increase because of the high cost of manual labour. But the design of the product is an important aspect of robotic assembly. Assembly methods that are satisfactory for humans are not always suitable for robots. Screws and nuts are widely used for fastening in manual assembly, but the same operations are extremely difficult for a one-armed robot. Inspection is another area of factor operations in which the utilization of robots is growing. In a typical inspection job, the robot positions a sensor with respect to the work part and determines whether the part answers the quality specifications. In nearly all industrial robotic applications, the robot provides a substitute for human labour. There are certain characteristics of industrial jobs performed by humans that can be done by robots:

a) the operation is repetitive, involving the same basic work motions every cycle;

b) the operation is hazardous or uncomfortable for the human worker (for example: spray painting, spot welding, arc welding, and certain machine loading and unloading tasks);

c) the workpiece or tool are too heavy and difficult to handle;

d) the operation allows the robot to be used on two or three shifts.

GEORGE STEPHENSON

George Stephenson was a British inventor and engineer. He is famous for building the first practical rail way locomotive. Stephenson was born in 1781 in Wylam, near New castle upon Tyne, Northumberland. During his youth he worked as a fireman and later as an engineer in the coal mines of Newcastle. He invented one of the first miner's safety lamps independently of the British inventor Humphry Davy. Stephenson's early locomotives were used to carry loads in coal mines, and in 1813 he established a factory at Newcastle for their manufacture. In 1829 he designed a locomotive known as the Rocket which could carry both loads and passengers at a greater speed than any locomotive constructed at that time. The success of the Rocket was the beginning of the construction of locomotives and the laying of railway lines. Robert Stephenson, the son of George Stephenson was a British civil engineer. He is mostly well-known known for the construction of several notable bridges. He was born in 1803 in Willington Quay, near Newcastle upon Tyne, and educated in Newcastle and at the University of Edinburgh. In 1829 he assisted his father in constructing a locomotive known as the Rocket, and four years later he was appointed construction engineer of the Birmingham and London Railway, completed in 1838. Stephenson built several famous bridges, including the Victoria Bridge in Northumberland, the Britannia Bridge in Wales, two bridges across the Nile in Damietta in Egypt and the Victoria Bridge in Montreal, Canada. Stephenson was a Member of Parliament from 1847 until his death in 1859. At that time, Watt was the partner of the inventor John Roebuck, who had financed his researches. In 1775, however, Roebuck's interest was taken over by the manufacturer Matthew Boulton, owner of the Soho Engineering Works at Birmingham, and he and Watt began the manufacture of steam engines. Watt continued his research and patented several other important inventions, including the rotary engine for driving various types of machinery; the double- action engine, in which steam is admitted alternately into both ends of the cylinder; and the steam indicator, which records the steam pressure in the engine. He retired from the firm in 1800 and thereafter devoted himself entirely to research work. The misconception that Watt was the actual inventor of the steam engine arose from the fundamental nature of his contributions to its development. The centrifugal or flyball governor, which he invented in 1788, and which automatically regulated the speed of an engine, is of particular interest today. It embodies the feedback principle of a servomechanism, linking output to input, which is the basic concept of automation. The watt, the unit of power, was named in his honour. Walt was also a well-known civil engineer. He invented, in 1767, an attachment that adapted telescopes for use in the measurement of distances. Watt died in lie the field, near Birmingham, in August 1819.

1. What was the reaction of the people after the invention of the steam engine?

In Washington the story is told of a director of the Patent Office who in the early thirties of the last century suggested that the Office be closed because “everything that could possibly be invented had been invented”. People experienced a similar feeling after the invention of the steam engine. But there was a great need for a more efficient engine than the steamengine, for one without a huge boiler, an engine that could quickly be started and stopped. This problem was solved by the invention of the internal combustion engine.

2. Who introduced the first cheap motor car?

The first practical internal combustion engine was introduced in the form of a gas engine by the German engineer N.Otto in 1876. Since the motor transport began to spread in Europe very rapidly. But the person who was the first to make it really popular was Henry Ford, an American manufacturer who introduced the first cheap motor car, the famous Ford Model “T”.

FMS IN THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY

The main goal of a flexible manufacturing system is offering the speed needed to change quickly in account with market conditions, but not sacrifice any quality. Equipping production with a flexible manufacturing system may initially be more expensive than traditional equipment, but the overall goal of reducing expenses can be achieved easier. Manufacturers are capable of saving money by using the same equipment for performing two or more functions.

One of the most common examples of a flexible manufacturing system can be seen in the manufacturing of automobiles. Certain equipment is used for attaching doors to a sedan. With just a few simple adjustments, the same line and equipment may be used to attach doors to a sport utility vehicle or some other type of vehicle. In fact, the automobile industry keeps on saving a substantial amount of money using a flexible manufacturing system. A report in 2011 indicated that Ford Motor Company saved approximately $2.5 billion US dollars by putting flexible systems in at five manufacturing plants. The company estimated that it could save at least half of the cost of manufacturing updated models using the systems.

In some cases, the machines may not only be used for producing or assembling different parts for different models, but to make customizations. These customizations, without a flexible system in place, would take much longer and be much more expensive for the customer. Using machines with the ability to be flexible can not only speed the process up, but can improve customer satisfaction by bringing down the price.

The Motor Car Electrical/Electronic Equipment

A modern motor car has a considerable number of electrical and electronic systems. It is fitted with certain lights, sidelights and headlights to be used in darkness and in poor visibility. Indicators, or flashers, are used to inform others of the direction in which a motor car is turning.

Brake lights are required during the application of the brakes. There are a lot of other items which are operated electrically, such as windscreen wipers and washers, horns, heaters, audio systems, conditioning systems, central locking, etc. The modern motor vehicle uses electronically controlled systems to operate many of the electrical items which were once controlled by simple on/off switches. Lately, electronically controlled engine systems have become common to achieve good performance and acceptable emission levels. To operate the motor car electrical and electronic equipment electrical power is needed. It comes from a generator which is driven from the engine. Since certain items may be needed when engine is not turning, a battery or accumulator is fitted. The battery is charged by the generator when the engine is running.
