ABOUT THE FESTIVAL / О ПРАЗДНИКЕ

Every year on March 8th, International Women's Day is celebrated by millions of women throughout the world. This is a solidarity day of all women who struggled for equality of rights and emancipation. The holiday is an opportunity to remember the struggles of women throughout history as well as the achievements they have made. During the 8th of March different events are held (such as concerts and demonstrations). The events cover women’s achievements as well as the problems that women face. Ежегодно день 8 марта отмечают миллионы женщин во всем мире. Это день солидарности женщин в борьбе за равенство прав и эмансипацию. Праздник напоминает о том, какие трудности переживали женщины в ходе мировой истории и каких высот они достигли за это время. В день 8 марта проводятся различные мероприятия (концерты, демонстрации). Эти события освещают как достижения, так и проблемы женщин.

International Women's Day originated at an international congress in 1910 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This congress was attended by women from 17 different countries. At that congress, a woman from Germany named Clara Zetkin suggested setting a special date to celebrate each year as an international women’s day. That day women would have an opportunity to hold special events and demonstrations in order to attract public’s attention to their problems.

На конгрессе, немка Клара Цеткин предложила учредить ежегодный Международный Женский День. Тогда женщины могли бы устраивать специальные мероприятия и демонстрации, чтобы привлечь внимание общественности к своим проблемам.

It was proposed to set the date on the 8th of March because it was an anniversary of the famous protest of textile and garment workers in 1857 in New York City. Women lived in crowded tenement houses and worked for 16 hours a day. They protested against the terrible working conditions and required a wage raise. This story pushed many women to begin to struggle for their political rights, the right to vote and improvement of working conditions.

Женщины жили в переполненных домах, работали по 16 часов в сутки. Тогда они требовали изменения невыносимых условий труда и повышения заработной платы. March 8th has become a truly international holiday in 1977. That year the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution inviting every country to set the 8th of March as a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace.

Поистине международным праздником 8 марта стал в 1977 году. Тогда Генеральная Ассамблея Организации Объединенных Наций приняла резолюцию, в которой предложила всем странам провозгласить 8 марта Днем Организации Объединенных Наций по правам женщин и международного мира.

Nowadays the International Women’s Day is celebrated all over the world but not only on the 8th of March. Also, the content of the celebration varies a lot. In many countries, for example in Russia, this holiday is celebrated as much as Mother's Day (which is celebrated in May in Europe and the USA). Women receive flowers, gifts and cards from their families. Thanks to this holiday a great deal has already been accomplished to help women in the world. But we still have a lot of work to do. Now congratulate your mothers, grandmothers, wives and sisters with that day and give them all your best wishes and love!

В наше время Международный Женский День отмечают во всем мире, правда, не обязательно 8 марта. Отличается и содержание праздника тоже отличается. Во многих странах, например в России, праздник 8 марта отмечают не меньше, чем День Матери (отмечается в мае в Европе и США). Женщины принимают цветы, подарки и открытки от своих семей. Благодаря этому дню многое было сделано, чтобы помочь женщинам во всем мире. Но многое еще предстоит сделать. INTERESTING FACTS

In 1893, New Zealand became the first country to grant equal voting rights to women.	Новая Зеландия стала первой страной, которая дала право голоса женщинам (1893 год).
