Одним из краеугольных камней современной химической теории является Периодический закон. Это можно просто сформулировать следующим образом: свойства элементов являются периодической функцией ядерных зарядов их атомов. В 1869 году Менделеев пришел к выводу, что путем расположения элементов в порядке возрастания атомного веса были четко определены сходство и периодичность свойств различных валентных групп элементов.
