Sound cinema

The first known public screening of a sound film was held in Paris in 1900, but commercial success for sound films came only three decades later. At the time of the advent of cinema, there was already a recording technology, such as the phonograph. The first attempts to combine it with a movie camera were made in 1894 by Thomas Edison, who created the kinetophonograph. Most film producers were initially skeptical of the idea of sound in cinema, fearing the loss of the universality of the film language and the international audience. American film producers predicted the end of the export of motion pictures with the arrival of sound, which could sharply reduce the income of Hollywood. Many perceived attempts to voice the film as a meaningless attraction: one of the active opponents of sound in cinema was Charlie Chaplin. In 1928, Soviet cinematographers Vsevolod Pudovkin, Sergei Eisenstein and Grigory Alexandrov issued a "Sound request", warning against the abuse of sound. The synchronization problems were solved by combining the image and the phonogram on a common medium-film. The Hungarian engineer Deniz michali was the first to implement this principle in 1916. The optical track combined with the image became suitable for mass use in 1922 in the German technology "Triergon". In 1927, the first full-length film with a synchronous speech phonogram was the musical film "jazz Singer", created using the" Whitaphone " technology with sound on a gramophone record. Most of the film consisted of musical numbers shot in medium and General plan, which did not require precise synchronization, and intertitles were used instead of dialogues. In the late 1980s, the Dolby laboratory developed the Dolby SR (Spectral Recording) two-track stereo optical phonogram.

Modern film copies are equipped with digital optical soundtracks of SDDS or Dolby Digital standards. At the same time, an analog Dolby SR soundtrack is placed with them, which serves as a backup in case of a digital failure. Some films are released with the DTS phonogram on a separate CD, for synchronization of which a time code is imprinted in the space between the analog phonogram and the image. In widescreen cinema, the same type of phonogram replaced the outdated magnetic one.
