Travelling (3)If we are fond of travelling we see and learn all sorts of things we can never see or learn at home. Though we may read about them in books and newspapers and see pictures of them at the cinema. The best way to study geography is to travel and the best way to get to know and understand the people is to meet them in their own houses. When I was a little girl every holiday that I had seemed to be perfect. In those far-off days the sun seemed to shine constantly and the water was always warm. All day I played on the sands with my friends. We made sandcastles with huge yellow walls. Sometimes we left the beach and walked in the country. Although I am now an adult, my idea of a good holiday is much the same as it was. I still like the sun and the warm sand and the sound of waves breaking on the beach. I don't want to build sandcastles any longer but still I like sunbathing and the feeling that sand is running through my fingers. I like travelling. And I want to smell different smells. I want to see different kinds of trees, flowers and plants. When I spend a holiday in travelling I always take a camera with me and photograph everything that interests or pleases me: the sights of a city, views of mountains, lakes, valleys; the ruins of ancient buildings. Мне все еще нравится солнце, и теплый песок, и звуки волн, бьющихся о берег. Я больше не хочу строить замки из песка, но мне нравится загорать на солнце и ощущать песок, сыплющийся сквозь пальцы. Мне нравится путешествовать. И я хочу вдыхать раз- личные ароматы. Я хочу увидеть разнообразные деревья, цветы и растения. Когда я провожу отпуск путешествуя, я всегда беру с собой камеру и запечатлеваю все, что интере- сует и нравится мне: достопримечательности города, виды с гор, озера, долины, водопады; руины древних зданий. Спу- стя годы это напомнит о проведенном мной счастливом времени. | ||
My RoomWе live in three-room flat. The room I like best in our flat is mine. I use my room as a study and a bedroom. It is very nice and cosy. There isn't much furniture in it, only the most necessary pieces. The built-in furniture doesn't take much space in the room. On the left there is my bed and desk. The desk has a lot of drawers where I keep my text-books, notes, pens, pencils and other necessary things. On the right there is a sofa and a built-in wardrobe. In the right corner there is a comfortable arm-chair. Beside it stands a lamp with blue shade. I like to turn on the lamp, sit in the arm-chair and read an interesting book. There are some shelves with books in my room. You can see Russion and English books there. There is a big thick carpet on the floor. There are some posters with my favourite singers on the wall. I like my room very much. When my friends come to visit me, I invite them into my room. My room is a nice place for both rest and work. Questions: 1. Do you like your room? 2. Is your room small? 3. The Town of My DreamPeking is the capital of the People's Republic of China. It is spreads across a vast area. Part of its border is formed by the Great Wall of China, a huge wall which stretches along the mountains. It is the ancient seat of government and a modern industrial and commercial city. The population of Peking is about 10 million people and is still growing, although it is only the second largest city in China. In 1421 Peking became the imperial capital of the Ming dynasty (1368—1644) and it was during this time that the spacious walled city was built. Like many ancient Chinese cites, the walls and streets were based on the points of the compass. Peking has remained the capital of China since then. With its modern international airport, it is not surprising that Peking has become a popular tourist destination. Peking's broad, straight streets are crowded with people, bicycles and buses. Very few people own a car. Industries include textiles, steel and engineering. It is also a city of great cultural importance. There are more than fifty institutes of higher education, including Peking University. It has a famous opera, a ballet and some outstanding museums — The Museum of Chinese History and Gugun Museum. Among the many historical and cultural landmarks in Peking is Square, one of the largest public squares in the world. It is used for political rallies and military parades. Questions: 1. My FriendsI have a lot of friends, but the best friend of mine is Irina. She has blue eyes, a round face, fair hair and a broad smile. She is short and slim. I have known her for a long time, since our first school years. But we became true friends four years ago. We have much in common: we like English and psychology, sport and dancing. We are looking at this world in the same way and first estimate a person's mind, their kindness. We don't understand meanness and treachery. For many years we have been sitting at the same desk: Irina and me. But it's only recollections now. On a May morning the last bell rang for us for the last time and in the farewell waltz the last school ball was dancing. Irina chose the proffession of psychologist and handed in the application for admittance to the institute. She finished school excellenty and she won't have any problems with the admittance, I hope. We shall study at different institutes and, of course, we won't see each other very often. But at weekends I'll come to her place. Irina has wonderful parents. We have a good time together. I think that we shan't stop going to the gym at school and we'll often meet our school friends. I also have a pen-friend. Her name's Vika. She lives in Moscow. Vika is a model. She has an oval face, green eyes, straight nose and full red lips. She is rather tall and slim. She has long, curly brown hair. We spend a lot of time together. Я думаю, мы не оставим наших занятий в школьном тренажерном зале и часто будем встречаться со школь- ными друзьями. У меня также есть подруга по переписке. Ее зовут Вика. Она живет в Москве. Вика — модель. У нее оваль- ное лицо, зеленые глаза, прямой нос и полные красные губы. Она довольно высокая и худая. У нее длинные волнистые каштановые волосы. Мы хорошо проводим время вместе. Я люблю своих подруг и знаю, что они настоящие друзья. | ||
