    Module 1

My name is Alex, or Alejandro in Spanish. My family are from Mexico, but we live in London. I’m 18 and I’m an economics student at London University. This is my family: my mom, Elena. She is 41, and my dad, Enrique is 53. He has got a computer business here in London. Then this is my sister, Beatriz. She is at school. I’ve also got a little brother, Lucas, he’s only three. He’s really great…really, really funny.

This is my mom’s sister, Lourdes . I think she is about 36 or 37. She is a really big lawyer in Mexico. She is very clever, I think. She hasn’t got any children… she isn’t married. And this is my dad’s brother Roberto. He is a businessman. He’s got four or five shops in Mexico City. I think he is quite rich. His wife’s name’s Isabella. She is a Spanish teacher. She is really nice - really funny, and they have got two children. Bella’s about 6, I think, and Mateo’s 4.

    Module 2

I have not much time to relax. In my free time I usually listen to music, watch TV and videos, read books and magazines, play computer games. The computer is one of my many interests. That’s why programming and computer technology are my future professional sphere. Every weekend I spend a lot of time in the world wide web. I use the Internet in the educational process and, of course, for fun. I have a great number of web friends and we like talking to one another using a web camera. I have a big collection of CDs and records. They include reggae, rock, pop, classic music, jazz.

I can say that reading is also my favorite pastime. Books bring pleasure and delight. From books we learn to express our thoughts and feelings more exactly. Books are the richest source of information. My friends and I often exchange books and discuss them. Among my favorite genres are fantasy, history, philosophy and technical literature. I think that hobbies and interests are an important part of our life. They help people to develop, express themselves and relax. They can be funny, educational, satisfying in different ways. So, it’s good to have many hobbies. But the problem is to find time for all of them.

    Module 3

Steve: Hi Susan, did your new Spanish class start today?

Susan: Hi Steve. Yeah, it was great fun. Hola!

Steve: Hey, you learned something already! So, tell me about the other students.

Susan: Well, first I want to tell you about the teacher. She's crazy! Her name in Maria and she's from Malaga in the south of Spain. She's about 35 years old and is a really friendly person. She's very funny. It's difficult to understand her accent sometimes but I'm sure it will get easier.

Steve: How many students are there in the class?

Susan: Oh, about 12 I think. Everyone is about the same age, so that's great.

Steve: Where are you going, where are you doing the lessons? Are you at the college near the tennis club?

Susan: No. We're at the town library. We are using a small room at the library so it's really quiet and all the books are right there!

Steve: Are the other students all American?

Susan: Most of them are, yes. There is a Japanese girl called Miko. She is probably the best in the class. Her accent is wonderful. I think she studied Spanish at school.

    Steve: Ah ha...

Susan: And then there's an English boy called James. He lives here and works at the university. He wants to learn Spanish because he hopes to go to Argentina next year. He is very young, about 22 years old.

Steve: And the rest of you are American?

Susan: Yes, apart from James and Miko, the rest of us are American. I met your mother's friend Rosemary.

    Steve: Rosemary? Who's she?

Susan: That friend your mother plays tennis with sometimes.

Steve: Oh, Rose Marie! Why is she learning Spanish? She speaks Italian and French already!

Susan: Well, maybe she wants to be multi-lingual. She speaks really well. I feel so stupid in that class and that's after just one lesson! Oh dear....

Steve: Don't worry Susan, maybe I'll come by next lesson and then I will be the worst for sure. What did you do in today's class?

Susan: Because it was the first lesson only, we did some basic things like the numbers to ten and how to ask a person's name.

Steve: OK, ask me my name in Spanish!

Susan: Oh! Erm, I can't remember. Como ti, come te yama, como ti yamo, oooh! I can't remember anything!

Steve: (laughs) I will come to the next lesson and help you!

    Module 4

The Moscow Metro is a rapid transit system that serves Moscow and the neighboring town of Krasnogorsk. Opened in 1935 with one 11-kilometer line and 13 stations, it was the first railway system in the Soviet Union. Currently, the Moscow Metro has 182 stations. Its route length is 327, 5 kilometers. The system is mostly underground, with the deepest section located at 84 meters below ground, at Park Pobedy station. The Moscow Metro is the world’s second most heavily used rapid transit system after Tokyo’s subway.

    Module 5

Lake Baikal is one the oldest lakes in the world. It is located in the very heart of the largest continent in a rift valley between two tectonic plates. There is a theory that Lake Baikal is on its way to become an ocean basin. Its shores are spreading apart at the speed South America is moving away from Africa. The Lake contains 20% of the world’s fresh water resources. In the course of millions of years its closed ecosystem formed a unique natural environment which should be carefully studied to gain a deeper understanding of the evolution of life on our planet. This region of Eastern Siberia is of particular interest to world science. Here the steppes are gradually replaced by Siberian boreal forests, the mountain ranges form diverse landscapes of forest: Alpine meadows and Alpine tundra. This is the land of crystal clear lakes, clean rivers, and magnificent waterfalls. Lake Baikal has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

    Module 6. Listening Comprehension 1

    R — Reporter T — Tourist

    Dialogue 1

R: Hello, Can I ask you a question?

    T1: Yeah, sure, go ahead.

R: Are you off on holiday?

T1: Yup, certainly am ….. at last!

R: What are you looking forward to?

T1: Oh, the nightlife, definitely. I mean that’s what everybody goes for, isn’t it? yeah, we’re planning on partying all night, every night. I mean, we’re only going for a week and we have to make the most of what Ibiza’s got to offer.

R: Sounds like you’re going to need a holiday to get over your holiday — you’re going to be exhausted with all that clubbing.

T1: Yeah, probably! but we’ll have plenty of time to catch up on our sleep when we get back home.
    Dialogue 2

R: Hello, are you off on holiday today?

T2: Yeah, we are, well sort of ….

R: Do you mind if I ask you a quick question?

T2: Er, no, no, not at all.

R: What are you most looking forward to?

T2: Well, you see, we’re off on our honeymoon…

    R: Congratulations!

T2: Thanks…yeah, so I reckon what I’m most looking forward to is the romantic walks along the beaches. They say that Mauritius has got some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. And during the two weeks we’re there we’re planning to visit every one!

R: Well, I hope you have a great time!

T2: Thanks a lot, I’m sure we will!
    Dialogue 3

R: And you, sir, what are you most looking forward to?

    T3: The people-watching, I think.

    R: The people-watching?

T3: Yes, you know, sitting in a street café watching the world go by.

    R: Ah?

T3: Yeah, love it. And the women! You can’t beat Italian women. Stunning. Gourgeous. Absolute knockout. And what better place to see them than in the capital?

R: Is that all you’re planning to do during your holiday?

T3: More or less — unless I get lucky ..and a bit of sightseeing too, of course: the Coliseum, the Vatican, that kind of thing. But I’m only going for the weekend, so there won’t be much time to do anything else.
    Dialogue 4

R: Can I ask you what are you most looking forward to on your holiday?

T4: Er... I don’t know really. We’ve never been to Madrid before, so lots of things… the city, the people, the sights, oh yeah, I do know what I’m looking forward to most — the football.

    R: The football?

T4: Yeah, we’ve got tickets for the match on Sunday and that’s definitely going to be the highlight of the four days.

R: And who are travelling with?

    T4: My mother…

R: Your mother? And is she looking forward to the football, too?

T4: Yes, definitely … she’s more of a fan than I am! She really likes their gailkeeper.
    Dialogue 5

R: Where are you off to, sir? Madam?

T5: We’re off to New York.

R: On holiday or on business?

    T5: Holiday.

R: What are you most looking forward to?

T5: The shopping! We’ve been to New York quite a few times, so we’ve done the sights. We go for the shopping. Best place for shopping in the world.

R: Are you looking for anything in articular?

T5: Well, the first thing we’re going to buy is two large suitcases. To put everything in that we buy.

R: That sounds like serious shopping!

    T5: yeah… definitely. We’ve got about er, 5 000 between us.

    R: And you’re going to …

T5: Yes, we’re gong to spend all of it over the weekend. Every single penny.

R: On anything in particular? Apart from the suitcases, of course.

T5: No, no. Whatever bargains we find, you know.

    R: Well, happy shopping!

    T5: Thanks!
    Dialogue 6

R: And what are you most looking forward to on your holiday?

T6: Well, we’re not actually going on holiday. We’re gong to visit my husband’s parents in Melbourne for ten days…

R: Australia? That’s a long way to go for ten days …

T6: Yes, it is, but we’re going over to break some good news to the family…

    R: Oh, yes…?

T6: Yes, we’re going to be parents. I’m expecting a baby in June.

R: Congratulations! And you haven’t told them yet?

T6: No, we haven’t. We wanted to break the news in person.

    R: So that’s obvious what you’re most looking forward…

T6: Yes, that, and the weather. It’s summer over there and it looks like it’s going to be cold and wet here.

R: Certainly does! Well, enjoy your trip and congratulations again on the good news!

    T6: Thanks.
    Module 6. Listening Comprehension 2

Tour guide: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen and welcome to this fantastic tour of London by bus. My name’s Greg and I’m your guide this afternoon on our tour of London. As you can see, we’re on an open-top bus, so you can see all the attractions from your seat and you don’t need to walk anywhere. And please don’t worry about the rain, I’m sure it’ll stop soon. A-a-and please ask any questions at any time.

    Tourist 1: I have a question.

    Tour guide: Yes?

Tourist 1: Do you have extra umbrellas? I mean, if it rains a lot.

Tour guide: Err, no, we don’t have any extra umbrellas, but don’t worry, I’m sure the rain will stop soon. Right, OK, so where are we going on our wonderful tour? Well, the tour takes two hours and we are going to visit all the famous sites. First we’ll see Madame Tussauds, the museum with wax models of famous people and celebrities, then we’ll drive along the most famous shopping street in the world, Oxford Street. After that we’ll see the famous clock Big Ben and The Houses of Parliament. As we drive along the river you’ll see the popular attraction, the London Eye, from which you can see the whole city on a sunny day. Then we’ll see Tower Bridge and the famous Tower of London before arriving at Buckingham Palace, just in time for a cup of tea with the Queen.

Tourist 2: Is that included in the tour? A cup of tea with the Queen?

Tour guide: Err, well, no, not exactly, but there’s a lovely café near the palace where you can get a cup of tea. (Sound of a storm right overhead, loud thunder and very heavy downpour)

Tourist 1: I have another question.

    Tour guide: Yes?

Tourist 1: Can we have our money back? We’re getting off the bus.

Tour guide: Err, well, you see ... Quick! Run! Everyone off the bus!
