Тема 23. Условные придаточные предложения второго типа


Examples:

  1. If there were no oil, we should nothave a lot of modern devices now. – Если бынебыло нефти, у нас небылобы многих современных приборов.

  2. If the river were deeper, it would be navigable. – Если бы река была глубже, она была бы судоходной.

Task. Translate the following sentences into Russian

A.

  1. If the protective equipment were bad, there would be a lot of accidents.

  2. If we had an ammeter, we should be able to measure the current.

  3. If we had a better boiler, we should be able to produce more steam.

  4. If the equipment met our requirements, we should buy it immediately.

  5. If the turbines and boilers did not meet our requirements, we should not buy them.

  6. If the turbine efficiency were higher, we should save fuel and money.

  7. If we were all here, we should start our experiment.

  8. If I were you, I should not become an engineer.

  9. If the director were in, he would receive you in his office.

  10. I should be able to do much better job, it I weren't so tired now.

B.

  1. If the current in the winding were lower, the results of the experiment would be wrong.

  2. If the generator were broken, the power station would not be able to supply electrical power to its consumers.

  1. Were the weather better, the air temperature would be higher. – Еслибы погода была лучше, температура воздуха была бы выше.

  2. Had they a modern computer, they would be able to process the data. – Еслибы у них был современный компьютер, они смоглибы обработать данные.

Task. Translate the following sentences into Russian

A.

  1. Were the resistors connected in parallel, the voltage in each branch would be equal.

  2. Had we a digital voltmeter, we should measure voltage with better accuracy.

  3. Were there a breaking in the circuit, there would be no current in it.

  4. Were there no heater in the room, the temperature in it would be very low.

  5. Were I to finish the project quickly, I should work overtime.

  6. Could a capacitor conduct direct current, it would not be a d.c. circuit breaking.

  7. Were the station more modern, it would consume less fuel.

  8. Were the pavement less slippery, there would be less car accidents.

  9. Were the particles charged, we should detect them by means of this device.

  10. Had I enough money, I should buy the latest model of mobile phone.

B.

  1. Had thermal power stations fuel of higher quality, their efficiency would be higher.

  2. Were there a breaking in the filament, the lamp would not light.

  3. Could we design an effective non-conventional power station, the problem of fuel shortage would be solved.

  4. Could we design an effective non-conventional power station, we should use oil and fuel as raw materials for chemical industry.

  5. Were the wire larger in its cross-section, the heat produced would be more negligible.

  6. Were there a potential difference between the two points, there would be a current flow between them.

  7. Had we a platinum thermocouple, we should be able to measure temperature more accurately.
