My Future Profession

Finishing school is the beginning of the independent life

for millions of school leavers. Many roads are opened before

them: vocational and technical schools, institutes and

universities. But it is not an easy thing to choose a profession

out of more than 2,000 existing in the world. Some pupils

follow the advice of their parents, others can't decide even

after leaving school.

As for me, I made my choice long ago. I want to become a

teacher of the Ukrainian language and literature. My choice

of this occupation didn't come as a sudden flash. During all

school years literature was my favourite subject. I've read a

lot of books by Ukrainian and foreign writers.

I understand that reading books helps people in selfeducation

and in solving different life problems. I would like

to teach my pupils to enjoy reading, to encourage them to

learn our national language and literature, which is the source

of national culture.

It is known that teaching is a very specific and difficult

job. It shouldn't be taken easily. The teacher is a person who

is learning as well as teaching all his life. Most jobs can be

done within the usual office hours from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m., but

teacher's work is never done and evenings are usually spent

in marking exercise-books and preparing for the next lesson.
Teachers do not only teach their subjects. They develop their

pupils' intellect, form their views and characters, their attitudes

to life and to other people. It's a great responsibility and the

teacher must be a model of competence himself.
It's not as easy as it may seem at first. But I think that love for children combined with the knowledge I'll get at the University would be quite enough to succeed in my work. I'm applying to the philological department and I am sure my dream will come true sooner or later.

Моя будущая профессия

Окончание школы — это начало самостоятельной жиз-

ни для миллионов выпускников. Перед ними открыто много

дорог: профучилища и техникумы, институты и универси-

теты. Но нелегко выбрать одну профессию из 2000, суще-

ствующих в мире. Некоторые ученики следуют советам

своих родителей, другие же не могут сделать выбор даже

после окончания школы.

Что касается меня, я сделал(а) свой выбор давно. Я

хочу стать учителем украинской литературы и языка. Мой

выбор этой профессии не был неожиданностью. Все школь-

ные годы моим любимым предметом была литература. Я

читал(а) много книг украинских и зарубежных писателей.

Я понимаю, что чтение книг помогает людям в самооб-

разовании и в решении разных жизненных проблем. Мне

бы хотелось научить детей получать удовольствие от чте-

ния, помочь им выучить родной язык и литературу, кото-

рый является источником национальной культуры.

Известно, что профессия учителя особенная и трудная.

К ней нельзя относиться легкомысленно. Учитель — это

человек, который учится сам и учит других всю жизнь.

Большинство работ выполняется в обычные рабочие часы

с 9 утра до 5 вечера, но работа учителя никогда не закан-

чивается, и вечера обычно заняты проверкой тетрадей и

подготовкой к следующему уроку.

Учителя не только обучают своему предмету. Они раз-

вивают способности учеников, формируют их взгляды и

характер, их отношение к жизни и к людям. Это боль-

шая ответственность, и учитель сам должен быть образ-

цом компетентности.

Это не так легко, как кажется на первый взгляд. Но я думаю, что любовь к детям, соединенная со знаниями, которые я получу в университете, поможет мне преуспеть в работе. Я поступаю на филологический факультет и я уверен(а), что моя мечта рано или поздно осуществится.

108. My Plans for the Future

This year I'm leaving school. I have already decided what

career to choose. I would like to be a psychologist. I want to

help people to solve their problems. I want to help them to

understand their inside world, to help them to be confident. I

love working with people and children.

I think it's a difficult job, because one should love people,

take care of them, support them.

This profession is rather new and hence very interesting.

Psychologists work with people from different layers of

society.

I realize that my dream can come true only if I work hard.

любить людей, заботиться о них, помогать им.

Эта профессия новая и потому очень интересная. Пси-

хологи работают с людьми из разных слоев общества.
Я осознаю, что моя мечта может осуществиться, только

если я буду усердно работать.

110. I Want to be a Programmer

I want to become a computer programmer. I am interested

in computers. It is a whole new world.

Many people continue careers of their parents or grand

parents but it is not the case with me. My mother is a teacher

and my father is a doctor. But I don't want to be neither a teacher

nor a doctor.

My favourite subjects in school are mathematics, physics,

and, of course, computer science. I am not interested in such

subjects as geography, biology or chemistry.

My hobby is computer games and computer programming.

I have a computer at home and can spend hours working at

it. It is much easier to do things on computer, for example

to write a composition. You can change the text as many

times as you want and you don't need to rewrite everything

if you changed something.
I think that the profession of programmer can give many

opportunities. Computers are the most rapidly changing sphere

of modern technology. We are living in the age of information.

And I think that the future is just filled with computers.

Today, in England or in the US people can work, go shopping

or even go on dates sitting at their computers. In our country,

computers have been used just for a short time.
So after I finish school I want to enter the university and

study computer science.

Я хочу быть программистом. Я интересуюсь компьюте-

Многие люди идут по стопам своих родителей или де-

душек и бабушек, но со мной дело обстоит наоборот. Моя

мать — учительница, а отец — врач. Но я не хочу быть ни

учителем, ни врачом.

Мои любимые предметы в школе — математика, физи-

ка и, конечно, программирование. Я не интересуюсь таки-

ми предметами, как география, биология или химия.

Мое хобби — компьютерные игры и программирова-

ние. У меня дома есть компьютер, и я могу часами рабо-

тать на нем. На компьютере гораздо легче делать разные

вещи, например, писать сочинения. Можно изменять текст

столько раз, сколько понадобится, и не нужно будет пере-

писывать весь текст заново, если вы что-то в нем изме-

нили.

Я думаю, что профессия программиста предоставляет

много возможностей. Компьютеры являются самой быст-

ро меняющейся сферой современной технологии. Сегодня

мы живем в век информации. И я думаю, что будущее

принадлежит компьютерам. Сегодня в Англии или в Со-

единенных Штатах люди могут работать, делать покупки

и даже ходить на свидания, сидя за своим компьютером.

В нашей стране компьютером пользуются совсем недавно.

Так что после того, как я закончу школу, я хочу посту-

пить в университет и изучать программирование.

111. Teacher of English

It is not easy to decide what profession to choose. Usually,

pupils' plans for the future change many times during the

school years. There are so many people who influence you in

choosing your occupation. Parents and friends play a very

important role in your choice. Teachers' influence on pupils'

minds is also great.

My favourite subject is English. And I think this is my

teacher who made it so. I understand the importance of

knowledge of a foreign language. It enables people from

different countries to communicate with each other, to read

foreign literature in the original, to broaden their outlooks.

So I decided for myself to become a teacher of English. Of

course, I know that it is not easy and takes much patience and

effort. A teacher has to know how to teach, how to make

difficult things understandable, how to get students interested

in the subject.

And of course a teacher ought to have perfect knowledge of his subject. I think the ideal teacher is the one who can combine all these. My present teacher is just like this. She is a great specialist and also a nice personality. I hope in future I can become as good teacher as she is.

Выбрать профессию нелегко. Обычно планы учеников

на будущее меняются много раз в период обучения. На

выбор профессии влияют многие люди. Родители и друзья

играют очень важную роль в выборе. Также велико влия-

ние учителей на решение учеников.
Мой любимый предмет — английский. И я думаю, это

моя учительница сделала его таким. Я осознаю важность

знания иностранного языка. Оно позволяет людям из раз-

ных стран общаться, читать иностранную литературу в

оригинале, расширять кругозор.

Итак, я решила стать учителем английского языка.

Конечно, я понимаю, что это нелегко и требует огромного

терпения и старания. Учитель должен знать, как учить,

как сделать трудные вещи понятными, как заинтересовать учеников предметом.

И, конечно же, учитель должен знать свой предмет в совершенстве. Я думаю, идеальный учитель — тот, кто может объединить в себе все это. Моя учительница как раз такая. Она отличный специалист и прекрасный человек. Я, надеюсь, в будущем смогу стать такой же, как она.
