Упражнение 1.
Полиция собиралась арестовать ее брата, но к счастью они нашли настоящего преступника. The police were going to arrest her brother but luckily they found the real criminal.
Анна должна была встретить нас на вокзале, но не пришла. Ann was to have met us at the station but she didn’t come.
Том не присутствовал на лекции. Возможно, он заболел. Tom didn’t attend the lecture. He may have fallen ill.
Не могли бы вы объяснить мне это правило? Ни я, ни мои сестры не можем понять, как его применять. Could you explain this rule to me? Neither I nor my sisters are able to understand how to use it.
Не возражаете, если я позвоню вам вечером? – Пожалуйста, только меня не будет дома до восьми. Do you mind my phoning you in the evening? – Yes, please. But I won’t be home before 8.
Говорят, что уровень безработицы постепенно снижается. Вы этому верите? The level of unemployment is said to be gradually decreasing.
Что вы делаете в этой комнате? Предполагается, что вы не должны заходить сюда. Здесь секретные материалы. Доступ к ним строго ограничен. What are you doing in this room? You are not supposed to enter it. Secret materials are kept here. The access to them is strictly limited.
Интересно, почему отец так кричит? Должно быть, он вышел из себя из-за поведения сына. Why is father shouting like that, I wonder? He must have lost his temper because of his son’s behaviour.
Ты должен пообещать мне, что ничего никому не расскажешь. You must promise me not to tell anything to anyone.
Вам придется удалить этот зуб. Лечить его бесполезно. You’ll have to have this tooth extracted. It’s no use treating it.
Этот собор строился, когда мы переехали в этот город. Не успели его построить, как началась гражданская война. This cathedral was being built when we moved to this city. No sooner had they finished it than the Civil war started.
После окончания института Павла направили на работу в один из лучших сервисных центров города. After graduating from institute Paul was sent to work in one of the best service centres in the city.
Чем больше я думаю, тем больше убеждаюсь, что я прав. The more I think, the more sure I get that I am right.
Упражнение 2.
1. –Как он узнал об этом? – Я не знаю. Возможно, он следил за мной. А может быть, он случайно заметил, как я передаю Энн записку. –How did he learn? – I don’t know. He may have been following me. Or he may have noticed me passing a note to Ann.
2. Попрощавшись с мистером Питом, я завернул за угол и только тогда вспомнил, что не получил от него инструкций о дальнейших действиях. Having said good-bye to Mr.Pitt I turned the corner and only then remembered that I hadn’t got any further instructions from him.
3. Они так сильно похожи, что трудно отличить одного от другого. They look so much alike that it’s difficult to tell them apart.
4. Что произошло? – Только что была авария. Водитель не пострадал, а пассажир, кажется, сломал руку. What’s up?- There has just been an accident. The driver wasn’t/isn’t injured but the passenger seems to have broken his arm.
5. Не успел я выйти из дома, как начался дождь. У меня не было времени вернуться за зонтом, поэтому пришлось идти до остановки под дождем. Если бы я не был таким закаленным, я бы непременно заболел.
6. Не отрицайте, что вы солгали начальнику, если вы действительно сделали это. Никто никогда об этом не узнает, я обещаю.
7. Менеджер не понравился мне с первого взгляда. Он все время потирал руки, как будто мыл их и не переставал улыбаться. К тому же я не мог понять, что он говорит из-за его акцента.
8. Мистер Грин поскользнулся, сильно ушиб ногу, с трудом поднялся и едва мог двигаться. Ему была очень нужна помощь.
9. Ужасная авария привела к тяжелым травмам обоих водителей. Меня потрясло это происшествие. Я не мог спать ночью, и сейчас все еще нахожусь под впечатлением этого события.
10.Говорят, что эти знаменитые пьесы написаны не Шекспиром, а кем-то другим. Но никто в этом не уверен.

Pete and I have been friends for more years than I care to remember. We got … together from the moment we first met, discovering that we had many things in common. У людоеда много денег, а у дракона еще больше. The ogre has a lot of money but the dragon has got even more.
Мои подруги не увлекаются ни теннисом, ни шахматами. – Я тоже. My friends aren’t fond of either tennis or chess. – Neither am I.
Где то письмо, которое мне продиктовали? – Я, кажется его выбросила. – Что ты наделала! Его нельзя было выбрасывать! Where is the letter I was dictated to? – I seem to have thrown it away. – What have you done! It shouldn’t have been thrown away!
Чем больше учишься, тем более убеждаешься (to get convinced) в том, как мало ты знаешь. The more you study the more convinced you get that you know so little.
Старинное здание собирались сносить, но один знаменитый архитектор предложил восстановить его. The old building was going to be pulled down but one famous architect offered to restore it.
В этой библиотеке очень много книг, но большинство из них – древние рукописи на латинском и греческом языке. There are lots of books in this library but most of them are ancient manuscripts in Latin and Greek.
Что произошло, Мэри? –Почему вы думаете, что что-то произошло? -Вас бы сейчас не было здесь, если бы не случилось что-то серьезное. What has happened, Mary? – Why do you think sth has happened? – You wouldn’t be here unless sth serious had happened.
Я перевела все предложения правильно. Ну разве я не умница? I have translated all the sentences correctly. Aren’t I clever?
Упражнение 8.
1. I came to the dwarf’s office early in the morning. I just wanted to make sure that he hadn’t been sent on a business trip.
2. That was a wonderful party! I wish you had been there. We danced and sang / were dancing and singing all day long.
3. Dennis being detained by his boss, we had to wait for him.
4. That’s unbelievable, Tom! How did you manage to fail your philosophy exam? You had been reading for it for a whole month!
5. Alice looked exhausted after that twelve-hour working day. I suggested that she look for another job and soon she was offered a position in a bank.
6. I felt sick on Tuesday and Mom made me consult the doctor. Having examined me, the doctor recommended me to stay in bed for a few days.
7. I’m not sure Jane has told /is telling the truth but I know her to be an honest girl.
8. I have always lived in Ufa but I am moving to Moscow as I want to study there.
9. The doctor having been called for, we hurried back to the injured man.
10. Why are you thinking about that rubbish when you know you ought to be thinking about the correct answers to the test?
Упражнение 9.
pass on (x 2) / listen in / leave out / go into / take back
Gossiping is one of those strange things in life - most people do it, or have done it, but most people also agree that they don't like it if people gossip about them. If we hear our name mentioned, or the name of someone we know, we usually can't stop ourselves from listening in . And, if we overhear something interesting, we pass the information on to our friends and colleagues. Of course, we recognize that the information is private or personal, and so we begin by saying things like, "Now don't tell anyone, but I heard that ...", or "This is strictly between us. ...", but this doesn't stop us from going into every embarrassing detail of the story - we even add parts to the story to make it more interesting! We also recognize that the information may not be true by saying things like, "Apparently, ..." or, "According to John, ....". This way, if anyone asks us to take back the things we have said, we can say, "I didn't say it was true, I was just passing on what I heard."
Perhaps a safer way of gossiping would be to leave out the name of the person it's about, but if we did that it wouldn't be very interesting, would it?

Его собирались допрашивать (to question) в час дня, но следователя (investigator) задержали в прокуратуре (prosecutor’s office). He was going to be questioned at one o’clock but the investigator had been detained at the prosecutor’s office.
В пятницу приезжает знаменитый профессор Смит. Вы собираетесь посетить его лекцию? Famous professor Smith is coming on Friday. Are you going to attend his lecture?
Отец вышел из себя из-за того, что я два часа болтала по телефону. Он сказал, что отключит (disconnect) мой телефон, если я буду подолгу разговаривать вместо того, чтобы заниматься. Father lost his temper because I had been chatting on telephone for two hours. He said he would disconnect the telephone if I went on speaking for ages instead of studying.
Придется приложить громадные усилия, чтобы сдвинуть этот камень. Но мы не сможем выбраться, если не уберем его. We’ll have to make tremendous efforts to move this stone. But we won’t be able to get out if we don’t put it away.
Ослу предложили работу в рекламном агентстве. – Это прекрасная возможность! Почему бы не попробовать? The donkey has been offered a good job at a travel agency. – That’s a fine opportunity! Why not try / doesn’t he try?
Привет! Не ожидал встретить тебя в Лондоне. Где ты остановился? – Я в отеле, в пяти минутах ходьбы от Пикадилли. Hi! Didn’t expect to meet you in London. Where are you staying? – At a hotel, in five minutes of walk from the Piccadilly.
Вчера я наткнулся на весьма интересную газетную статью. Прочитав ее, я многое понял. Yesterday I came across quite an interesting newspaper article. Having read it I understood much / many things.
Когда были получены доказательства его вины, преступника приговорили к смерти. When the evidence of his guilt was got the criminal was sentenced to death.
Почему ты был груб с Элин? Разве тебя не научили быть вежливым с людьми? Why were you rude to Helen? Haven’t you been taught to be polite to people?
Упражнение 11.
The problem to be solved you have to study all the advertising materials sent. So don’t waste time!
He asked me where was that book he had given me the day before.
Dad suggested that I phone / should phone Mom as soon as we got home.
Coffee being too hot, I decided to make a phone call first.
If I were a president I would introduce a 20-point evaluation system at school.
Even if I could stay at your place then I wouldn’t do it.
The doctor said that when he came the patient had already died and his help was no more needed.
