Упражнение 1. Поставьте существительные в форму множественного числа

Упражнение 3. Как вы уже знаете, неопределенный артикль не употребляется с неисчисляемыми существительными. Вычеркните артикль там, где ему не место.

Упражнение 4. С существительными во множественном числе неопределенный артикль тоже не работает. Уберите его там, где ему быть не положено.

Упражнение 5. Постройте предложения из данных словосочетаний по заданной модели. Не забудьте: исчисляемому существительному нужен артикль, а неисчисляемому – ни в коем случае.

Упражнение 6. Дополните предложения глаголом to be в нужной форме (is / are)

  6. My family are early risers.

  7. According to modern standards my family is not big.

  8. All the furniture in this office is the latest design.

  11. The council is responsible for looking after roads.

  13. The Government are of the opinion that money in the accounts is siphoned out of the country.

  16. There is a hair on the dinner table.

  19. My wages are a bit higher now.

Упражнение 7. Переведите эти несложные предложения на английский язык. Обратите внимание на глагол-связку (to be) и артикли.

  1. Эти сведения очень важны для ведьмы (witch). This information is very important for the witch./ These data are…

  2. Эти советы очень полезны. This advice is very useful.

  3. Это принцесса. Ее волосы светлые и длинные. Это ведьма. Ее волосы седые и всклокоченные. This is a princess. Her hair is fair and long. This is a witch. Her hair is grey and spiky.

  4. Его одежда – в основном джинсы, свитера и майки. His clothes are mainly sweaters, jeans and T-shirts.

  5. Полиция уже здесь. The police are already here.

  6. Бильярд – любимая игра пиратов. Billiards is the pirates’ favourite game.

  7. Хорошие джинсы – дорогие. Good jeans are expensive.

  8. Упорный труд – ключ к успеху. Hard work is a key to success.

  9. Это творческая работа, однако знания здесь тоже очень важны. This is creative work but knowledge is also very important here.

  10. Осторожно, лестница очень крутая. Watch(look) put! The stairs are very steep.


§ 3. Как существительные «дружат» между собой. How nouns make friends with each other (Noun constructions).

Упражнение 6.

A. Прочтите и переведите предложения, обращая внимание на новую лексику.

1. He held her at arm’s length, scrutinizing изучая her intently. 2. I’ve never grown to like him так и не полюбил, not one iota, even though I’ve known him and his family for donkey’s years. 3. What saved the situation was that Alan’s office was only at a stone’s throw from the club. 4. In his mind’s eye, Maxim pictured the people who were important in his life. 5. My mother loves the house and the grounds and she can garden away to her heart’s content. 6. We are at our wit’s end how to solve the problem. 7. The guns were now hidden, out of harm’s way. 8. B. Составьте 10 предложений, используя выражения из упражнения 4.
Упражнение 7. Переведите предложения на английский язык

  1. Завтрашняя программа очень напряженная. Tomorrow’s programme is very intense.

  2. Эдвард – один из близких друзей принца. Edward is one of the prince’s close friends.

  3. Я обычно встречаюсь с родственниками в доме у бабушки с дедушкой. I usually see my relatives at my grandparents’ place.

  12. Я считаю, что приличия ради нужно принять приглашение людоеда (ogre). I think we should accept the ogre’s invitation for appearance’s sake.

  13. Он всегда держит меня на приличном расстоянии. He always keeps me at an arm’s length.

  14. Библиотека очень богатая. Читайте сколько душе угодно. The library is very rich. Read to your heart content.

  15. Никто не шутит на пороге смерти. No one jokes at death’s door.
