The text is concerned with the problem of software. The software tells the machine’s physical components what to do. It consists of a set of programs. The programs are written in programming languages.

The major kinds of software, namely system and application programs are presented. The definition of the system software is given as well. The system software is a set of supplied programs. There are several types of system soft- ware. The most important type is the operating system. The characteristics and the functions of the operation system are presented in detail.

Application software exists for the benefit of people. Multiple applications are sometimes packaged together. The purpose of application programs as well as the advantages of application software packages are briefly considered. Applica- tion software can be divided into several kinds. The use of different kinds of ap- plication software is described in detail.
