Група підмета звичайно поширюється атрибутивним словосполученням, означувальним підрядним реченням, прийменниково-іменниковим сполученням, дієприкметниковим зворотом і деякими іншими означеннями. В українській мові такі речення вживаються значно менше, тому при перекладі застосовуються певні трансформації синтаксичної структури речення. Підмет англійського речення часто трансформується в обставину, а присудок може відтворюватися в українському реченні безособовим зворотним дієсловом: The book earned him his M.I.T. Ph.D. in 1959. Завдяки цій книзі він отримав ступінь доктора у Масачусетському технологічному інституті в 1959 році. Notes, references, and index show scholarly care. Such a solution must, as far as I can see, take account of the following facts. 11. Chapter 3 reviews the basic theoretical and methodological assumptions and practices of the research. 12. The last few decades have witnessed a surge of interest in research on methodological issues. 13. This paper will selectively survey some recent proposals concerning methodological approaches. 14. Results strongly suggest that these observations do not match commonly held perceptions. 15. In addition, some of the papers develop and demonstrate new concepts and ideas based on his thought. 16. Імпліцитний підмет У деяких реченнях англійського наукового стилю, передусім у метатекстових і парентетичних, підмет може бути відсутній, але його досить легко можна вивести з контексту (як правило, це займенник it). Звичайно такі речення перекладаються безособовими реченнями без підмета: As has already been illustrated, Banfield has no way of accounting for the interpretation. Речення з пасивною формою дієслів think, expect, show, see, find, argue, know, mean, consider, regard, report, believe, hold, suppose, note, presume, claim, admit, interpret та ін. перекладаються складнопідрядним реченням з додатковим підрядним, де головне речення складається з неозначено-особової форми дієслова-відповідника (у відповідному часі) особової форми англійського дієслова-присудка, а підрядне речення — із підмета, що відповідає підмету англійського речення, та особової форми дієслова- присудка, яка відповідає інфінітиву англійського речення: The data have been admitted to be incorrect. Визнано, що ці дані неправильні. Such diffusion is presumed to have occurred in many cases. Вважають, що така дифузія відбувалась у багатьох випадках. Як можна бачити з прикладів, при перекладі слід звертати особливу увагу на форму англійського інфінітива — простий (неперфектний) інфінітив звичайно перекладається формою теперішнього часу, а перфектний інфінітив -- формою минулого часу дієслова-присудка підрядного речення: Still they can hardly be said to have formulated a true scientific theory. І все ж навряд чи можна стверджувати, що вони сформулювали дійсно наукову теорію. The term "model" is held to have important normative significance.
