§7 THE SUPPOSITIONAL MOOD AND SUBJUNCTIVE I IN SUBORDINATE CLAUSES §7.1 Subject clauses 1. The present tense of the Suppositional Mood or Subjunctive I is used in subject clauses after the principal clause beginning with it’s necessary, it’s important, it’s desirable, it’s advisable, it’s demanded, it’s recommended, it’s obligatory; it’s suggested, it’s requested, etc. The Past tense is not used because suggestion, advice, recommendation as a rule refer to the future. e.g. It is necessary that you (should) go to the hospital. It was imperative that she (should) be present at the conference. It will be arranged that you (should) get everything necessary. 2. Both tenses of the Suppositional Mood can be used after the principal clause beginning with it’s natural, it’s surprising, it’s strange, it’s curious, it’s odd, it’s doubtful, it’s impossible, it’s unpleasant, it’s understandable, it’s a pity, it’s a shame, etc. Present Suppositional Mood shows simultaneousness, Past Suppositional Mood shows priority. e.g. It’s surprising that she should be in love with him. It’s strange that she should still be studying at school. It’s surprising that she should have married him.

Present Suppositional Mood or Subjunctive I is used in object clauses after verbs to suggest, to demand, to require, to request, to insist, to recommend, etc. e.g. He suggested that we (should) start working at once. She insisted that we (should) stay to dinner. 2. Both tenses of the Suppositional Mood are used after expressions to be astonished, to be sorry, to be pleased. e.g. I’m surprised that you should think so. I’m surprised that she should have helped you. 3. Both tenses of the Suppositional Mood or Subjunctive I can be used in object clauses after expressions of fear when the clause is introduced by the conjunction lest. In other cases the Indicative Mood is used. e.g. She fearedlest she (should) be punished. She was afraidlest she (should) miss the train. She worriedlest the children should have gone to the forest. She was afraid that Nick would never believe her.
