    From top to bottom
If you ask someone to draw a mine, what will they draw? A metal tower with a wheel at the top and a rope – a shaft headframe of course! Most people relate mines to headframes because that is the most distinctive feature they see. But the headframe is only a small part of a more complex system. A mine hoisting system is much more than a lift, indeed modern hoisting system can include massive machines, able to pull loads of many tonnes from depths of as much as three kilometers at speeds up to 70 kmph. Developments in trackless haulage equipment have meant that ramps from surface are usually preferred for shallow deposits, though shafts are still the only practical means for accessing deeper orebodies. Most older mines still use shafts for their main access, often with equipment and control systems that were designed 50 or more years ago. As a result, there are two main markets for the manufacturers of shaft hoisting equipment: new installations, usually for deep shafts, and re-equipping and upgrading systems.
Modern hoisting systems have become very sophisticated. Current designs incorporate the latest developments in electronic control and monitoring systems. These developments have allowed increased operating speeds and capacities, reduced downtime and, of course, have improved safety.
    5. Answer the following questions.

What is the most distinctive feature of a mine?

What does a mine hoisting system look like?

Is a head frame constructed for mining shallow deposits or for accessing deeper ore bodies?

What markets are there for the manufacturers of shaft hoisting equipment?

What do current designs of hoisting systems incorporate?
